What To Do In Kariba

Welcome to “Kariva” or the “little trap”.

Well, the resort town is called Kariba, but Kariva is where the name came from, referring to the rock jutting out from the gorge where the dam wall was to be built.

Whether you touched down at Kariba Airport then transferred by water, air or road to your lodgings, you are most welcome! Many people love to make a road trip of it via the scenic route through the Zambezi escarpment hills from Harare or Lusaka through Chirundu or Siavonga. There are quite literally so many ways you can get here that will make you feel relaxed and get you to the ultimate destination.

1st impression on arrival? Hot. Piping HOT. It actually is always hot throughout the year due to our location in the Zambezi Valley. So, by way of preparing you, make sure you bring light clothes, wide-brimmed hats, great sunglasses, sunscreen and good lip balm. Staying consistently hydrated under the African sun is key because no one really has time for heatstroke. You are here to relax.

Ok, now that you know what to bring and therefore what to wear we can finally talk ‘Getting around’. The best option is actually on foot. Getting around the small town is very easy. If you came to do a little more than just exploring the little town however you will have to get a rental car or even a small plane.

Kariba is close to Mana Pools, Matusadona and Chewore where you can come up very close and personal to the wildlife. If you opt to camp in Mana Pools, for instance, you may have to share your breakfast with the elephants who roam freely and often come up to camps to see what’s new.

You don’t want to miss out on an opportunity to ride on a houseboat while you are in Kariba, you can book these in advance or upon arrival. There are many that will suit your needs whether you are a whole family strong, or just you and your better half. There is something for everyone. Some of the Zambesi Cruises float down the length of the Lake, connecting Binga with the town and making stops at different safari camp destinations. Sounds amazing right? Don’t say we never shared.

Welcome o Kariba everyone, we hope you have a most relaxing stay!
