The administrative centre of Matabeleland North. Largely a rural and agricultural area, cropping is possible only along the Gway River. Gwayi River is said to get its name from old tobacco plantations after which the river was named. In isiNdebele, Gwai means tobacco. The town is not far from Hwange National Park.
