Interestingly, Mutoko is the birthplace of several well-established postcolonial poets and novelists. Tsitsi Dangarembwa author of Nervous Conditions being the most prominent. Grown from a small administrative outpost, Mutoko would become a key producer of Tomatoes and Mangoes both for local consumption and export markets. (Most Zimbabweans can tell a story about a 'ROLEX' truck on Mutare Road - this was a well known tomatoe transporter servicing the export market). Some of the farms still exist and are in varying stages of repair. Most welcome visitors, expect tomatoe and vegetable markets along most roads.
