Kwekwe as per the last national census is the seventh largest city in Zimbabwe. It was originally a mining camp after the discovery of gold and later chrome and iron ore in the area. ZISCO Steel is based in Kwekwe with the high-density settlements of Old and New Mbizo built around it. These settlements would grow to supply the factories and mines with labour for generations. Kwekwe happens to be home to Zimbabwe's current president. The towns most famous mine would be Globe and Pheonix which has been closed for decades.
