On the edge of the Eastern Highlands lies the tiny village of Chimanimani, hidden from the mainstream, completely tranquil and relaxing. Originally called Melsetter when it was founded by Thomas and Dunbar Moodie in 1892, what you see now is not where the original village was located, it is however still as beautiful.
If you want mountains, horseback riding, dips in small pools beneath soft and elegant waterfalls, look no further. Chimanimani is about a 4-hour drive out of Harare, one of those hours is quite windy, so be on your best driving behavior. Once there though, you may never want to leave. There are many places to stay and many a trail to hike in this small community, which will leave you wondering if you ever needed your cell phone anyway- other than to take pictures, of course.
Forest lovers will take delight in the virgin forests of the area. The thick, moist, evergreen forest that is found here is rare. Several species of butterfly, birds, plants, snakes and shy cats are commonly seen.
There are no roads in this wild area and only footpaths and narrow tracks lead to various places of interest. This adds to the fun of the wild and unspoilt character of the area.
