5 Zimbabwean Artists Making Waves

Like any country, Zimbabwe has a vibrant arts scene. From fine arts to musical hitmakers, through time Zimbabwe has put forward some world-class acts.

You may be aware of legends such as Oliver Mtukudzi and Thomas Mapfumo, this time around we thought we would bring you a fresh list of artists to look forward to in the music scene, here are 5 Zimbabwean artists making waves.

Sha Sha

The Mutare born songbird has taken the South African music scene by storm, collaborating with artists such as DJ Maphorisa and Mlindo the Vocalist as well as MFR Souls hit single, Love You Tonight. The singer has released her own EP Entitled Blossom which is available to stream now. Most notable off the project is her song Tender Love with DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small which you can watch here

Jah Prayzah

We can certainly say we are so glad this guy doesn’t appear in his full army regalia anymore! Since breaking onto the music scene with hit single Tsviriyo in 2013, Jah Prayzah continues to produce hit after hit with his authentically Zimbabwean sound. Jah Prayzha, named Mukudzeyi Makombe hails from the Uzumba in the North East of Zimbabwe.  This guy has climbed the charts and he is not stopping anytime soon. He has featured alongside various Africa artists such as Yemi Alade, Mafikizolo and Diamond Platnumz, as well as a most notable collaboration with Jah Cure to create Angel O- which you can check out right here. Enjoy!

Simba Tags

Usually behind the scenes, many do not know that Simba Tagz has been behind some of the hottest Afrobeats singles released over the last decade. Names such as Wizkid, Burna Boy, Maleek Berry, Mr Eazi and Davido can now be associated with our homegrown producer/ artist.

If you want to see for yourself what kind of sound we are trying to describe, check out the one and only Simba Tagz in collaboration with Mr Eazi

Ammara Brown

The talented Ammara Brown comes from a family of talented musicians. Her father is the legendary Andy Brown, whose children have all grown to be outstanding singers and instrumentalists. Ammara is an incredibly talented performer who captivates audiences across the world with her barefoot shows and unique voice to match. This last year has seen her take on a judging role for Old Mutual’s Mazing Voice- a Pan African show that showcases the best of African talent. One of her latest releases has seen her taking a stand against women’s abuse in the hit single Tichichema.

Winky D

There would be no way to let this shortlist end without the King of Zimbabwean Dancehall himself. Winky D, the Dancehall Igwe burst onto the Zimbabwean scene as a DJ in the late ’90s. He boldly competed in DJ battles that represented the Ghetto Youth Culture that he has carried with him across the world. To show he is a true representation of Zimbabwe, we believe you would be hard-pressed to find a single Zimbabwean who does not know the song Musarova Big Man

Definitely not a whole list of all the amazing artists we think are great. This should, however, give you a good place to start. We would love to hear who your favourite artists are!
